Some states have a feed-in tariff that let you make more money on what you generate than what you’re using… That’s right, you get paid MORE for the electricity you over-generate and sell to the electric company. Cha-ching!

What are the hurdles? Though a high efficiency building diaphragm can be constructed for approximately the same cost as a “conventionally built” structure and mechanical system, there are additional costs for electricity storage solutions, solar PVC (photo-voltaic cell) and perhaps wind technologies to generate the energy.

Before now cash-flow had been a deterrent to larger rollouts of solar, but with the plummeting costs for solar PVC systems and the vast number of incentives available, it looks as though NetPLUS buildings will become the standard soon enough.
 

Take A Long-Term View

Though large businesses with industrial-sized energy generating systems may look for a two-year payback, domestic habitats can easily get a deluxe system with an amortized payback over a seven year period.

The good news. Financial schemes are available in most regions of the country that allow domestic consumer to reduce that initial hurdle even further, much like the power-purchase agreements do for the commercial sector.

Banks and mortgage lenders have great programs with rock-bottom rates on buildings that pay little or nothing for utilities, offering higher LTV’s, with low to no points, and lower interest and cap rates. Some financial institutions also offer second-type mortgages to help spread those costs out even further.
